Kurdish Broadcaster on Trial in Denmark

Denmark-based Kurdish broadcaster Roj TV went on trial in Copenhagen Monday for allegedly promoting the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party .

Prosecutors said the station should be fined and taken off the air. The PKK is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and European Union.

The defense attorney for the station denies the charges and wants them thrown out.

Outside the courtroom, a small group of about 30 demonstrators protested peacefully in favor of freedom of Speech for Kurds.

The PKK rebels have waged a violent campaign for autonomy in Turkey's Kurdish southeast since 1984. More than 40,000 people have died in the conflict.
