A military judge in Uruguay has ordered the detention of five soldiers accused of sexually abusing a young Haitian man while serving as United Nations peacekeepers in the Caribbean nation.

The five men, whose names have not been released, face charges of disobeying orders and dereliction of duty.

Uruguayan President Jose Mujica has apologized for the alleged attack, which officials say occurred at a U.N. base in the small coastal town of Port-Salut. He said the men, who returned from Haiti Friday, face the most severe penalties if convicted.
