U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has pressed Pakistan to take action against the Haqqani militants the U.S. blames for a suicide attack on the U.S. embassy in Kabul last week in which four people died and more than 100 others were wounded.

Clinton delivered the message during a meeting with her Pakistani counterpart, Hina Rabbani Khar, on the sidelines of the annual United Nations General Assembly in New York. Their talks Sunday took place a day after the U.S. ambassador to Islamabad cited evidence linking the Taliban-allied Haqqani network to the Pakistani government.

In a news release Monday, Pakistan's U.N. mission said the meeting covered a wide range of issues, including terrorism and counterterrorism, economic development, trade, and cooperation in energy and infrastructure. Foreign Minister Khar said the focus of U.S.-Pakistani relations should be on enhancing trade between the two countries.

Khar stressed that the responsibility for effectively fighting terrorism must be shared by all. She said Pakistan needs assistance from the international community for its unique role in the fight against terrorism and that ordinary Pakistanis must feel that their sacrifice is being recognized.
