A Belgrade court has sentenced a former Serbian diplomat for helping a college basketball player flee the United States after beating another student into a coma.

Igor Milosevic, who was a Serbian consul in New York, will spend 18 months in prison.

He was convicted on charges of helping Miladin Kovacevic get emergency travel documents after U.S. authorities seized the student's passport.

Kovacevic is serving a two-year prison term for severely beating fellow student Brian Steinhauer in a bar fight near Binghamton University in New York in 2008. Steinhauer was left in a coma with a broken skull and brain damage.

Kovacevic was arrested and tried in Serbia after officials refused U.S. demands to extradite him to the United States.
