European Stocks Lower in Midday Trading

European stock prices are lower in midday trading Thursday.

London's Financial Times index and the CAC-40 in Paris are each down more than one percent, while the DAX index in Frankfurt is trading one and three-tenths percent lower.

In New York, the S&P futures contract is down nearly five points, indicating a lower opening.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained one percent to finish at 8,823.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose over two and one-quarter percent to finish the day's trading at 18,758.

Gold is trading at $1,671.05 an ounce.

The dollar is trading mixed against other major currencies.
