Azerbaijan has won a two-year seat on the United Nations Security Council after the other candidate from Eastern Europe, Slovenia, dropped out of the running.
Azerbaijan was elected in the 17th round of voting Monday with 155 votes in the 193-member General Assembly.
Slovenian diplomats complained about the voting system and the campaign for the seat, but say they will accept the results. Azerbaijan will represent Eastern Europe on the Security Council for two years starting in 2012.
Fifteen members sit on the council — five permanent members with veto power — Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States — and 10 temporary members who serve for two years.
Azerbaijan will join Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan, and Togo as the new members. They replace Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon, and Nigeria, whose two-year stints end on December 31st.
Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal, and South Africa remain on the Council thorough 2012.
