China is urging the United Nations nuclear watchdog agency to do more to ensure “the safe, secure and sustainable development” of nuclear energy.

Wang Min, Beijing's deputy envoy to the U.N., says the International Atomic Energy Agency should use the lessons gained from the Japanese nuclear plant meltdown to devise standards that would improve the emergency response in the event of another nuclear crisis.

He urged the IAEA Tuesday to increase technical assistance to developing countries, and improve the infrastructure of nations utilizing nuclear power for the first time.

China is engaged in a major nuclear plant construction program and has shown an interest in selling plants to other developing nations.

Several countries have postponed plans for new nuclear plants because of concerns caused by the Japanese crisis.
