The U.N. Security Council has strongly condemned the actions of the Lord's Resistance Army saying the rebel group continues to commit human rights abuses.

In a statement Monday, the Council demanded the LRA end all attacks, particularly against civilians, and insisted the rebels disarm and surrender. It also condemned the group's recruitment of children.

The LRA, once based in Uganda, is accused of attacking villages across central Africa over the past few years, killing and kidnapping hundreds of people.

The Security Council praised the militaries of the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Uganda for working to counter the LRA, and urged them to capture the group's top leader Joseph Kony.

The LRA is notorious for kidnapping people as soldiers or sex slaves. Three of the group's leaders, including Kony, are wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

U.S. President Barack Obama announced last month he was sending 100 military personnel to help central African governments fight the LRA.
