Court-appointed psychiatrists have declared Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik criminally insane.
The psychiatric evaluation found the confessed killer was insane when he set off a car bomb in Oslo, and went on a shooting rampage at a youth summer camp, killing 77 people earlier this year.
Prosecutors said Tuesday that they will recommend the confessed mass killer be placed in a mental institution, instead of being sent to jail.
Prosecutor Svein Holden said the report finds Breivik has developed paranoid schizophrenia over time. He says it also finds that Breivik lives in a “delusional universe” that governs his thoughts.
The 243-page report will be reviewed by a committee of forensic experts, and the court will have the final say on whether Breivik can be held responsible for the crimes.
Even though Breivik confessed to the killings, his lawyer says he denies criminal responsibility because he believes the massacre was needed to save Norway and Europe from an influx of Muslims and to punish politicians for embracing multiculturalism.
