Pearl Harbor Fact Box

– 130 vessels of the U.S. Pacific fleet were anchored at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

– 7:55 a.m. the first wave of Japanese aircraft arrived.

– 8:10 a.m. the USS Arizona exploded after an armor piercing shell struck the forward ammunition magazine.

– 1,177 U.S. sailors and marines on the USS Arizona were killed, about 333 survived.

– Only the USS Arizona, the USS Oklahoma, and the USS Utah were lost in the attack. The remainder of the fleet was salvaged and returned to action later in the war.

– Each year more than one million people visit the USS Arizona Memorial, constructed over the remains of the battleship.
