NATO hopes to mend relations with Pakistan quickly in order to reopen key supply routes for its forces fighting in neighboring Afghanistan.

NATO spokesman Brigadier General Carsten Jacobsen said Monday that the closure of the routes has adversely affected the economies of both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Pakistan blocked the Khyber and Chaman routes to Afghanistan in November after NATO airstrikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers on the border.

Pakistan has rejected a NATO investigation that blamed the incident on mistakes made by both sides.

The closure of the routes choked a major supply line for the 130,000-strong U.S.-led force in Afghanistan.

However, Jacobsen said the coalition has a stockpile of supplies that can keep operations in Afghanistan running at their current level even if the routes through Pakistan remain closed.
