Police in northeastern India say militants have shot and killed five people at a polling station.

Officials say the rebels killed a woman, three election duty staff members and a soldier Saturday in the Chandel district in the state of Manipur.

The attack came as heavy security was put in place across the impoverished state in a bid to thwart militant attacks during elections for a new local legislative assembly.
