The United States says it wants to work with Beijing to strengthen regional institutions in Asia.
The U.S. State Department says Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell stressed that point during talks Monday with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai outside Washington.
The department says the two diplomats discussed ways for their countries to promote greater cooperation on regional challenges. It says they also discussed pressing regional issues including developments in North Korea and Burma.
The talks took place during the third U.S.-China Asia-Pacific Consultations at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
China's foreign ministry says Cui is scheduled to travel to Mexico City to attend a planning session for the upcoming G20 Los Cabos Summit.
