Meteorologists say between six and 12 tornadoes ripped through the southwestern United States, tossing cars and tearing down buildings Tuesday.

Officials say at least 13 people were injured by the stormfront as it tore through Dallas, Texas and its suburbs – one of the most populous parts of the country. At least two people suffered severe injuries.

Weather forecasters described the tornadoes as “large and extremely dangerous.”

Officials say the damage is widespread and it is fortunate no one was killed. They say they will not likely know exactly how many tornadoes hit the area until later Wednesday.

American Airlines canceled all flights from the Dallas-Forth Worth Airport until Wednesday. Airline officials say they must inspect more than 100 planes for damage from hail.
