Police in France have arrested five suspects linked to violence this week in the northern city of Amiens.

Police say all of those arrested live in the northern part of Amiens, where the violence took place.

Clashes between youths and police on Monday left 16 officers injured. The rioters burned cars, destroyed a sports center, and set a primary school on fire.

Police have stepped up their patrols in the city, amid continuing tensions.

The violence was apparently triggered at a funeral Sunday for a young man killed in a road accident. Attendees were said to be irritated by police checking their identification.

In that neighborhood of the city, youth unemployment is as high as 60 percent.
