Turkish security officials say suspected Kurdish rebels have attacked a military convoy, killing seven soldiers and wounding more than 60.

Authorities say the convoy was traveling in Bingol province in southeastern Turkey when it was hit by a rocket Tuesday.

Rebels from the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, are active in Turkey's Kurdish-majority southeast.

Fighting has surged in recent months between Turkish security forces and PKK rebels, who took up arms in 1984 to demand autonomy.

Turkey and much of the international community, including the United States, consider the PKK a terrorist group.

On Sunday, a roadside mine blast in Bingol province killed eight police officers and wounded six. Authorities blamed the attack on PKK rebels.
