The American civil war drama “Lincoln,” the musical “Les Miserables,” and the comedic “Silver Linings Playbook” are in the forefront of the nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The nominations for best film and primetime television performances were announced Wednesday in Los Angeles.

All three films were nominated for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. Joining them in that category are the casts of the Iranian hostage drama “Argo,” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” in which British retirees relocate to India.

The top male stars in “Lincoln,” “Les Miserables,”and “Silver Linings Playbook” – Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, and Bradley Cooper, respectively – were nominated for best performance.

Nominations for best performance by a female lead in a film include Jessica Chastain as a CIA analyst hunting for Osama bin Laden in “Zero Dark Thirty,” Helen Mirren as the wife of Alfred Hitchcock in “Hitchcock,” and Naomi Watts as a victim of the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia in the “The Impossible.”

The SAG Awards, which are to be presented January 27, are generally seen as a prelude to the Academy Awards, the culmination of the Hollywood awards season.

“Lincoln” was also nominated for best performances for supporting male and female roles, while “Les Miserables” received a nomination for best female actor in a supporting role.

Nominations for television include the comedy series “30 Rock” in the categories for best male and female actors, while “Boardwalk Empire” and “Mad Men” are among the shows vying for best performance by a cast in a drama series.
