News reports from the northeastern state of Connecticut are reporting multiple deaths at a shooting at an elementary school.

The reports say the suspected gunman was among the dead at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Police and other emergency vehicles are at the scene. Images showed children being rushed out of the school.

Authorities are to provide further details at an afternoon news conference.

The White House says President Barack Obama has been informed of the shooting.
