Santita Dwi Putri | January 2012
The year of 2011 was filled with exceptionally successful movies: from Clooney’s “The Descendants,” “My Week with Marilyn,” rising star Rooney Mara in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and a surprise performance from Elizabeth Olsen in “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” Of course, we must not forget the last installment of the Harry Potter series in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” and the Thanksgiving blockbuster, “Breaking Dawn: Part 1.” Stepping into the year 2012, you can expect another successful year in the big screen. Get your popcorn ready and settle in that grandpa couch of yours for this year’s top five highly anticipated movies:
- Breaking Dawn: Part 2
Twi-hards and secret Twilight fans alike will have to shed their last tears for “Breaking Dawn: Part 2.” In this last chapter of Bella’s adventure in the world of vampires and werewolves, we will witness the Cullens gathering other vampire clans in order to protect newborn half vampire half human, Renesmee from the misinformed Volturi. For those who aren’t familiar with the Twilight books, expect more surprising twists. (It doesn’t hurt to host a Twilight-series marathon viewing either.)
- The Hunger Games
Get ready to be addicted. Adapted from bestselling novel series by Suzanne Collins, “The Hunger Games” is set in a post-apocalyptic country of Panem (where North America once stood.) Each year, leaders from the ‘Capitol’ hold the annual Hunger Games, where a boy and a girl chosen from each of the 12 districts fight to their deaths for victory (and survival, of course.) Starring Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence as lead female protagonist Katniss Everdeen, “The Hunger Games” will offer a new definition to novel-adapted movies after the Harry Potter and Twilight series.
- Snow White and the Huntsman
For Kirsten Stewart, taking a break is not an option when it comes to playing lead roles. Just days after her last shooting for “Twilight: Breaking Dawn,” Stewart is back on the set as the lead role of Snow White in “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Certainly, you can expect this adaptation of Snow White to be different considering Stewart is the leading actress (you have to agree, she has a rather ‘mysterious’ presentation when it comes to her acting.) “Snow White and the Huntsman” seizes us in a darker side of fairy tales where a princess takes charge of her future, along with her killer.
- The Dark Knight Rises
Will the ‘Batman curse’ continues as we wait for the release of “The Dark Knight Rises”? I certainly hope not. After two accidents, both involving a crash with no casualties (unless you count the few million dollar equipment loss), many are getting more anxious with the upcoming Batman movie. Not to mention the charming actress Anne Hathaway starring as a modern Catwoman. To top it all off, “The Dark Knight Rises” promises answers and the ending story to the legend of Batman. Well I’m not sure about the ending quite just yet; they seem to add another version movie series to the Batman stories over the years.
- The Avengers
What happens when you have Hollywood’s top stars (Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johannsson, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Samuel L. Jackson to name a few) combined in one action movie? A super-action movie! In “The Avengers,” the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agency brings together a team of humans equipped with superpowers to save humanity from the attack of extraterrestrial invaders. So the storyline may not be hard to guess, but this action-packed movie can still promise a good two hours of entertainment that will leave you feeling like you need to wrap a towel around your neck and save the world.
