The U.S Department of Education has established a $71 million grant, funding American institutions towards providing better education of world languages, culture and other areas related to international education and development.

The grants were issued under the Fulbright-Hays Act (1961) also known as the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act and the Title VI for Higher Education Act (1965).

The grant was put in place to assist with helping to educate and acquire teachers/leaders who are knowledgeable and well-versed in various cultures and languages. Through this, they aim for international students and teachers aiding American students in enhancing their global knowledge. The press release also included a quote from The U.S Secretary of Education John B. King, who praised the Department of Education’s initiative,
The world is becoming more interconnected than ever before and our programs and grants are helping students to acquire the skills, knowledge, and understanding they will need to compete on equal footing for 21st-century careers...The grants help to achieve exactly that, by providing teachers, students, and our communities with the opportunities and resources for ensuring our nation’s capacity for global competitiveness.”

One example of an institution utilizing their grant would be Benedict College. They are currently funding a project through the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program, to take a group of students to Cameroon over the summer to explore their language, history and studies. Likewise, Jamestown Community College will be funding a more in-house program. At JCC, they are implementing a “global” ready program for students entering college. By creating a partnership between language and global studies, they are working to influence students to look into studying foreign languages. This incentive also comes with study abroad opportunities.

The Fulbright awards are offered as either short-term or full-term. Title VI is given to American institutes overseas and local.
