The United States has launched a new initiative to encourage healthy eating, replacing its food pyramid guidelines in favor of simpler recommendations.
The Department of Agriculture on Thursday unveiled the “MyPlate” icon showing a plate with four quadrants — one each for fruits, vegetables, grains and protein. A cup marked “dairy” is next to the plate.
The agency said its previous food pyramid was complex and contained too much information.
First lady Michelle Obama said the new icon is an easy way for parents and children to learn what are ideal servings for a healthy meal.
Obama is a strong proponent for fighting obesity and has launched a campaign to encourage young people to exercise more and eat healthy.
Obesity is a growing problem in the United States, where unhealthy foods are readily available.
The recommendations from the Department of Agriculture on its new website, www.choosemyplate.gov, include avoiding the oversized portions that are popular at fast food restaurants, and having fruits and vegetables make up half of a meal.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there has been a dramatic rise in obesity in the United States over the past 20 years, increasing risks for cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and diabetes.
