Spain's Rafael Nadal has won a record-tying sixth French Open tennis title, beating Switzerland's Roger Federer 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 6-1.

It was the fourth French open final between the two highly ranked players, and Nadal has won all four. Nadal is 17-8 all-time in matches against Federer.

The Spaniard, who is the world's number one-ranked tennis player, equaled the record of six French Open titles set by Sweden's Bjorn Borg.

This is Nadal's 10th major championship. He has now won the French Open in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011.

Federer, the former top-ranked player in the world, won the title in 2009, his only French Open finals victory.

Li Na of China won the women's title on Saturday.
