South Korea's president urged North Korea Monday to take the path of peace, after a series of threats and mounting harsh rhetoric by Pyongyang.

In a Memorial Day speech at the National Cemetery, President Lee Myung-bak said that in return, South Korea would patiently continue to make sincere and consistent efforts for peace on the Korean peninsula.

Mr. Lee made no mention of recent secret discussions last month between officials of the two countries in Beijing.

The most recent tensions arose from news last week that South Korean troops have been using pictures of North Korean rulers as rifle-range targets. Several military training centers have been ordered to stop the practice and use conventional targets.
