Key Democrats have joined Republicans in urging Democratic U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner to resign as he faces an online sex scandal.
Democratic Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz said Wednesday Weiner should step down in light of his “offensive behavior online.” She said having the respect of constituents is fundamental for a member of Congress.
Schwartz holds a top post with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
On Tuesday, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Tim Kaine, called for Weiner to resign. Kaine said Weiner's public lying about his questionable online activities is “unforgivable.”
Also Tuesday, Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor urged Weiner to give up his seat.
Weiner admitted Monday to sending a lewd photograph to a female college student using his Twitter account. He also said he had “inappropriate” conversations on the Internet and telephone with about six women before and after his marriage.
He said he will not resign.
The New York Times reported Wednesday that Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, is pregnant with the couple's first child. The two got married about a year ago.
Abedin is a longtime aide to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Weiner apologized Monday for lying, when he claimed to have been the victim of computer hackers regarding the lewd photo. The congressman insisted he had not broken the law.
House Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has called for an Ethics Committee investigation to determine if any official resources were used or if any other violation of House rules occurred.
The Senate Majority Leader, Democrat Harry Reid, said Tuesday he knew of no way he could defend Weiner.
Weiner's sex scandal is complete with many Internet photos. Several photos surfaced Monday of Weiner shirtless, flexing his muscles.
