Two wild elephants went on a three-hour rampage in the Indian city of Mysore on Wednesday, trampling one man to death.

Authorities said the elephants entered the city from a nearby forest and panicked residents in the southern Indian city. The elephants attacked a cow, roamed onto the campus of a women's college and romped around a residential area and market. Schools and colleges in the area 140 kilometers southwest of Bangalore were closed as a precaution.

Officials said the victim was a security guard who came out of his house when he heard the commotion.

India has about 20,000 to 25,000 wild elephants. With their shrinking forest habitat, some elephants have ventured into villages in search of food.

Forest guards eventually tranquilized the two elephants in Mysore and planned to take them back to the forest.
