Authorities in Taiwan are considering whether to ban the use of mobile phones in schools by children under age 15.
Ministry of Education officials say they will hold a meeting to discuss the recommendation from a private-sector environmental group. The proposal was prompted by a World Health Organization report last week saying mobile phone use may cause cancer.
Taiwan's Central News Agency quoted a ministry official saying experts, parents, doctors and school officials will be invited to participate in the meeting. A date for the meeting has not been set.
The WHO reported on May 31 that electromagnetic fields created by mobile phones might be a cause of cancer in humans, especially when held close to the head over extended periods. The organization stressed that the evidence of a link is not conclusive.
