European Stocks Higher in Midday Trading

European stock prices are higher in midday trading Tuesday.

London's Financial Times index is up one-quarter of one percent. The CAC-40 in Paris is up nine-tenths of a percent, and the DAX index in Frankfurt is up nearly one and one-half percent.

In New York, the S&P futures contract is up nine points, indicating a higher opening.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained just over one percent to finish at 9,548.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was virtually unchanged, losing 12 points to finish the day's trading at 22,496.

Gold is trading at $1,517.93 an ounce.

The dollar is mixed in trading against other major currencies.
