U.S. authorities have taken a man into custody in connection with an investigation into a suspicious vehicle near the U.S. Defense Department headquarters.

A police official told reporters Friday that the man was discovered overnight in Arlington National Cemetery, just outside Washington. After finding the man, the official said park police thought it appropriate to look for a vehicle.

The official said the vehicle was found near the Pentagon, and that the local fire department sent a bomb disposal unit to investigate. The official could not confirm news reports saying authorities found a suspicious package inside the vehicle.

Officials closed major roads around the Pentagon.
