Afghan officials say a suicide car bomber has hit a German military convoy, killing three Afghan civilians and wounding 11 others.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack outside Kunduz city in northern Afghanistan.

A NATO spokesman said there were no coalition casualties.

Also Sunday, the office of the French president said a French soldier was fatally shot by insurgents while on an operation in Afghanistan's central Kapisa province.

Elsewhere, a joint patrol of Afghan and coalition soldiers killed several insurgents during an overnight operation in Balkh province in the north. A coalition statement says the Afghan-led force was searching for a local Taliban leader when it came under attack.

Eight NATO soldiers died in Afghanistan on Saturday.

The alliance said four troops were killed during insurgent attacks – three in the south and one in the east. The others died in southern Afghanistan from injuries “not related to battle.” The Associated Press says they died in a vehicle accident.
