An anonymous buyer has paid $4.6 million for one of the most iconic pieces of clothing in movie history — the white dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch.

The dress was among hundreds of pieces of movie memorabilia collected over the past 40 years by another film idol, Debbie Reynolds.

Her plans to open a Hollywood museum has run into financial problems, forcing her to sell off parts of her collection.

The Monroe dress is an enduring symbol of a Hollywood legend. In The Seven Year Itch, the actress stood on a subway grate on a New York street as the train rushed under her — blowing the dress over her thighs and revealing some of her underwear as she coyly tried to push it down.

The image cemented Monroe's place in movie history.

Other items sold at the auction include Charlie Chaplain's “Little Tramp” hat and Judy Garland's blue cotton dress from The Wizard of Oz.
