The White House says President Barack Obama on Wednesday will announce his plans for withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
A senior administration official said Mr. Obama will outline both a plan to start bringing U.S. troops home beginning in July and future withdrawals aimed at giving Afghans control of their own security by 2014.
The announcement comes amid growing public dissatisfaction with the Afghan war, caused by concern over the number of U.S. casualties and the effect of the cost of the war on the U.S. economy.
In Baltimore, Maryland, the U.S. Conference of Mayors approved a resolution Monday urging Congress to end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq quickly and redirect billions of dollars in monthly war costs to needs at home.
Outgoing Secretary of Defense Robert Gates recently addressed the question of America's impatience in the war, saying “this unhappiness, and certainly the war weariness after a decade, rests heavily on all of us.” He said the key is how to complete the mission in a way that protects American national security interests and the American people and contributes to stability.
Mr. Obama announced the July start for the withdrawal in December 2009, when he presented his overall strategy for Afghanistan.
