Foreign secretaries from India and Pakistan are gearing up for two days of talks in Islamabad aimed at reviving the peace process, stalled after the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks blamed on Pakistan-based Islamic militants.
India's Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and her Pakistani counterpart, Salman Bashir, will meet Thursday and Friday and are expected to discuss a wide range of issues.
India says the talks should focus on terrorism and the need to overcome a “trust deficit” between the two countries. Pakistan insists that India should move beyond terrorism and focus on other issues, such as peace, security, and the disputed Kashmir region.
No breakthrough is expected. Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna cautioned not to expect quick results, urging both sides to be patient, realistic and positive.
Higher-ranking talks between foreign ministers are due next month.
