British Prime Minister David Cameron Wednesday reaffirmed to U.S. President Barrack Obama that Britain would remove its combat troops from Afghanistan by 2015.
In a telephone call, the two leaders discussed troop withdrawal plans before Mr. Obama's Wednesday night address to the American people announcing the U.S. plan.
Britain has the second-highest troop contingent in Afghanistan with nearly 9,500 troops. The United States has by far the largest force in Afghanistan with approximately 100,000 troops. Mr. Obama says 33,000 U.S. troops will withdraw by the end of 2012.
Mr. Obama said that by 2014, the process of transition in Afghanistan will be complete, with Afghans taking responsibility for their own security.
