A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska late Thursday. The U.S. Geological Survey says a 7.2 magnitude quake was detected near the Aleutian Islands in the Pacific Ocean, more than 1,600 kilometers southwest of the city of Anchorage. Tokyo Stocks Up, Dollar Flat

Japanese share prices ended higher Friday, while the dollar was flat against the yen. Tokyo’s Nikkei index gained nine-tenths of a percent , to close at 9,679. In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 80.49 yen, nearly unchanged from late Thursday. The Taipei market lost four-tenths of a percent , to close at 8,533.

Vietnam’s Inflation Surges

A Vietnamese government report released Friday says the country’s inflation rate, already one of the world’s highest, rose again in June to almost 21 percent.
