Asian stock markets were mostly lower in trading Monday.

Tokyo's Nikkei index dropped one percent to close at 9,578.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell six-tenths of a percent to end at 22,042.

Elsewhere, share prices were lower in Taipei, Sydney, Wellington and Manila. Shanghai markets closed slightly higher.

The dollar was selling at 80.78 yen in currency trading, up four-tenths of a yen from late Friday.
