Heavy flooding in the midwestern state of North Dakota continues to threaten dozens of cities across the state despite reaching its peak.

The Souris River on Sunday crested at its highest level in 130 years, but not before damaging an estimated 3,000 homes and displacing more than 12,000 people in the city of Minot.

The river, which travels from Canada southeast into North Dakota and north back to Canada, has prompted officials in the Canadian province of Manitoba to warn residents to prepare for floodwaters arriving from North Dakota.

Meanwhile, a fast-moving wildfire Monday forced the evacuation of Los Alamos National Laboratory in northern New Mexico.

The blaze started Sunday afternoon about 20 kilometers south of the town of Los Alamos. The fire has burned through nearly 18,000 hectares and has endangered the country's nuclear weapons laboratory. It also forced the evacuation of 100 people from two nearby communities.

Fire crews across the U.S. are currently battling 36 large wildfires in nine states, including 14 in Texas, four in Arizona and six in Florida.
