Police in India say they have arrested seven people in connection with the murder of a journalist in the city of Mumbai.

The city's joint police commissioner, Himanshu Roy, told reporters Monday that a Mumbai crime boss ordered the killing of Jyotirmoy Dey but that police do not have a motive for the murder.

Dey, an investigative editor with Mumbai's Mid-Day newspaper, was gunned down by assailants on motorcycles on June 11.

Police say seven suspects were paid $11,000 dollars for the killing. Roy said the assailants fled to cities throughout India after panicking and learning that their victim was a journalist.

Guns and ammunition have been recovered.

The seven suspects have been ordered into police custody until July 4.
