US Stocks Rise

U.S. stock market indexes rose in Monday's early trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced half a percent, the S&P 500 rose four-tenths of a percent and the NASDAQ gained six-tenths of a percent.

European stock markets were mixed in afternoon trading. London's Financial Times 100 index gained two-tenths of a percent, the CAC-40 in Paris moved up one-tenth of a percent, but the DAX in Frankfurt fell two-tenths of a percent.

Earlier in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index dropped one percent to close at 9,578. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell six-tenths of a percent to end at 22,042.

The price of gold fell more than $6 to trade at $1,496.05 an ounce.

The dollar was higher against the yen but lost value compared to the euro.
