U.S. stock market indexes rose in Monday's early trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced nine-tenths of a percent, the S&P 500 rose eight-tenths of a percent and the NASDAQ gained 1.2 percent.
European stock markets were mixed at the close of trading. London's Financial Times 100 index gained four-tenths of a percent to end at 5,722. The CAC-40 in Paris moved up three-tenths of a percent to finish at 3,797, while the DAX in Frankfurt fell two-tenths of a percent to hit 7,108.
Earlier in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index dropped one percent to close at 9,578. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell six-tenths of a percent to end at 22,042.
The price of gold fell more than $7 to trade at $1,495.45 an ounce.
The dollar was higher against the yen but lost value compared to the euro.
