At least 12 people in southeast Bangladesh have been killed in a landslide triggered by incessant rain.

Authorities say mud buried homes in the country's port city of Chittagong overnight, as victims slept.

Rescuers recovered the bodies and were searching for others who may be trapped because it was unclear how many people were living in the homes.

Local Chittagong officials ordered nearby residents to evacuate the area.

Landslides are common in Bangladesh during the monsoon season, which normally runs from June to September.
