Tokyo's Nikkei index rose one percent to close at 9,965.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped one-and-two-thirds percent to end at 22,770.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Shanghai, Sydney, Wellington, Taipei and Manila.

The dollar was selling at 80.62 yen in currency trading, down two-tenths of a yen from late Friday.
