Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is traveling outside her home city of Rangoon for the first time since she was released from seven years of house arrest.
The Nobel Peace laureate arrived by plane Monday in the ancient temple city of Bagan with several of her close colleagues for a four-day visit.
She is joining her youngest son, visiting from Britain, who arrived in the central Burmese city a day earlier.
Aung San Suu Kyi has said her private trip will not include politics. However, the visit is seen as a test of official reaction ahead of a national tour planned by the political activist later this month.
The military-backed government has warned her banned party to stay out of politics and has said that chaos and riots could break out if she goes ahead with the tour. Pro-government thugs attacked her motorcade during a similar tour in 2003.
Aung San Suu Kyi was later sentenced to seven years of house arrest, which ended in November.
