Malaysian police are engaged in a standoff with a man who has taken a group of 30 pre-school children hostage.

The Malaysian Star newspaper says the man barged into the kindergarten wielding a hammer early Thursday in southern Johor state.

Police say he threatened to kill the children if negotiators did not give him a gun.
