Japanese markets closed lower Thursday, while the U.S. dollar is higher against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost just over one-tenth of one percent to finish at 10,071.

In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 80.94, a gain of a fraction of a yen from Wednesday.

Gold is trading at $1,527.28 an ounce.
