Officials in northern India say a train has rammed into a bus at a railway crossing, killing at least 31 people.

Authorities said the crash happened Thursday in Uttar Pradesh state as the bus was carrying 80 passengers who were returning from a wedding.

At least 17 people were also injured.

Rail accidents are common in India, and are often blamed on poor maintenance.

The train system carries more than 14 million passengers each day.
