US Stocks Close Lower

U.S. stock prices were lower at closing Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped half a percent to close at 12,657.

The S&P 500 lost seven-tenths of one percent to end the day at 1,344. The Nasdaq composite index lost half a percent to close at 2,860.

European stock prices were down Friday.

London's Financial Times index closed one percent lower at 5,991. The CAC-40 in Paris fell 1.7 percent (66 points) to close at 3,914, and the DAX index in Frankfurt was down nine-tenths of one percent at 7,403.

In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index gained close to three-quarters of one percent to finish at 10,138.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose nearly one percent to finish the day's trading at 22,726.

Gold settled at $1,541.20 per ounce, up $11 from Thursday.

The dollar was higher against the euro but lower against the yen.
