Indian railway officials say at least 10 people have died in a train derailment in the northern region of the country.

Authorities say 100 people were injured Sunday in the accident near the town of Malwa in the Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh state.

Officials say the number of injured passengers is likely to rise as rescuers made their way through the twisted coaches.

The Kalka Mail train from Howrah was on its way to New Delhi.

The cause of the derailment was not immediately clear.

India's railway network is one of the largest in the world. Accidents are common, with most blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
