Croatian President Ivo Josipovic has fired the country's top general after he was arrested for alleged involvement in fraud.
Until Sunday, General Mladen Kruljac was commander of Croatian ground forces.
Anti-corruption police arrested him and five other suspects Friday, accusing them of involvement in a fraudulent construction scheme. They also are suspected of stealing millions of dollars in federal funds and money from the town of Sibinj.
Croatian officials have promised to ramp up the fight against corruption as the country seeks to join the European Union.
