Officials in Cyprus say massive explosions Monday rocked a major naval base on the mediterranean island's southern coast.

The Cyprus News Agency reports at least eight fatalities and scores of injured.

It is believed the blast occurred when a munitions dump at the Evangelos Florakis base caught fire.

Witnesses report significant damage at the explosion site and in neighboring communities. A nearby power station also suffered damage.
