The U.N. Security Council has voted to shut down the peacekeeping force that tracks the 2005 peace deal between Sudan's former north and south.

The Council voted unanimously on Monday to end the more than 10,000-member force and to withdraw all troops from Sudan by August 31.

The force's mandate officially ended on July 9, when South Sudan broke away from Sudan and became an independent nation.

Sudan's government has demanded the force leave the country. Several Security Council members tried unsuccessfully to get Khartoum to approve an extension in the mandate.

Monday's resolution calls for staff, equipment and supplies to be transferred to new peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and the disputed Abyei region.

Separately, South Sudan has submitted its application for membership in the United Nations. The Security Council is expected to take up the matter later this week.
